KBRV Supports PortAware: Strengthening Resilience Against Maritime Crime

17/06/2026
  • On Tuesday, June 16, Hilde Peeters, KBRV’s Head of Social and Fiscal Affairs, participated in the official launch of PortAware, a new national awareness campaign designed to combat drug-related crime and corruption in Belgian ports.

The event featured opening remarks from Annelies Verlinden, Minister for the North Sea, and Emmanuelle Vandamme, Chair of the Executive Committee of the FPS Mobility and Transport. Both officials emphasized the critical need for vigilance within the maritime sector, with Minister Verlinden noting that maritime and port employees play a "key role" in the security of the logistics chain.

    "It Is Up to You"

During the event, Hilde Peeters joined a high-level panel discussion with National Drugs Commissioner Ine Van Wymersch. Addressing the importance of individual vigilance, Commissioner Van Wymersch stated: “Often people think that it doesn't make a difference if they report something, but it does: it is up to you.” She further emphasized that the maritime industry must move away from a culture of "looking away," as reporting suspicious behaviour is about collective safety and caring for colleagues rather than "snitching."

    Protecting the Human Link

As physical port security measures become more sophisticated, criminal organisations are increasingly targeting the people who keep logistics chains moving. Criminals seek information from anyone in the chain — from administrative staff with access to work schedules to dockworkers with knowledge of cargo — often initiating contact through seemingly innocent social interactions.

The campaign’s central message is that "looking away is not an option." Recognising signs of pressure and saying "no" early is crucial to preventing employees from being drawn into criminal activities from which it is difficult to escape.
