Belgium re-elected to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council with 133 votes

On 29 November, Belgium was successfully re-elected in Category C of the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) during the 31st session of the IMO General Assembly held in London. Singapore placed first in Category C with 153 voices, Belgium is ranked 10th with 133 voices. The IMO has 174 member states, 40 of which serve in the IMO Council, which could be considered as the governing board of the Organization.

“Belgium is the world’s 17th largest register of shipping and has a tonnage controlled fleet of 23,5 billion TDW or 1.23% of the world total in 2017. Therefore it is important for us to be represented at the Organization’s highest level of IMO” said Wilfried Lemmens, RBSA’s managing Director. “Not only has Belgium been re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation at Category C, our country also achieved the best result ever. Appreciation goes out to Philippe De Backer, Minister of the North Sea and the team of DG Shipping for their continuing commitment to participate in the Council and to further increase sustainibility, safety and efficiency in sea transport”, Wilfried Lemmens added.
