Webinar on alternative fuels in support of Belgian candidacy to IMO Council

With Belgium standing for re-election to the IMO Council in category C (special interests in maritime transport or navigation), Belgian shipowners voice their strong support for the country’s candidacy.

As the beating heart of maritime Europe, Belgium is uniquely placed to connect both Europe and the world – geographically, politically and economically – in order to cooperate closely together on shaping the future of shipping.

Home to the European institutions, Belgium is best placed to showcase European ambitions and initiatives especially when it comes to tapping the potentials of shipping in decarbonisation while strengthening its vital role in creating prosperity. The dual goal of economic and ecological importance is highlighted by Vincent Van Quickenborne, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the North Sea: “Shipping is of great importance to our economy. At the same time, we are strongly committed to the protection of the seas and oceans. In this way, our country plays a leading role at an international level in reducing emissions.”

With its long maritime traditions and previous experience at the IMO Council, Belgium is adept at fostering partnerships and collaborations not just between states, but also between regulators and industry. “The Royal Belgian Shipowners’ Association, as a representative body of the Belgian shipping, emphasizes the unique public-private cooperation with the Belgian Maritime Administration, in creating synergies and ensuring common objectives for sustainable shipping,” commented RBSA Managing Director, Wilfried Lemmens.
