    Background

Companies from across the maritime value chain are looking towards the EU as a global climate leader – and have high hopes that the EU Fit for 55 Package, to be finalized and voted on over the next few months, will be able to drive shipping decarbonisation in Europe and globally.

We cannot achieve zero-emission shipping without ambitious policy action, especially those that put a high enough price on carbon and supports investments in the production, distribution, and use of scalable hydrogen derived fuels.

Global regulation through the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the most effective solution to decarbonising a truly global sector. Despite the progress that is indeed being made, the IMO is not delivering sufficiently ambitious global regulation at the required speed. This underscores the need for EU regulation to set the decarbonisation transition in motion.

The event will begin with a presentation on how to strengthen EU Fit for 55 to be fit for zero emission shipping, including recent analyzes of how carbon contracts for difference can be used to reinvest EU ETS revenues into scalable zero-emission fuel production and to support the establishment of green corridors. Members of the European Parliament, industry leaders from across the value chain, as well as shipping and environmental NGOs will share their perspectives and discuss how the EU can be a global leader for shipping decarbonisation.
